                  About Us

Mission Statement
Habitat for Humanity – Trenton Area is a Christian organization that embraces people of all faiths who work in partnership to build decent, affordable housing and to create healthy vibrant and self-sufficient communities. We are committed to working with, and not for, people by using the principles of Habitat for Humanity International.

How the Program Works
Habitat for Humanity – Trenton Area is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit charitable organization seeking to alleviate the shortage of quality affordable housing in the Trenton Area. For many families in Mercer County, having a place to call home is impossible. The East Trenton median income is roughly $18,895, which is almost $12,000 below Trenton’s citywide household income. Seventeen percent of married couple households in East Trenton are below the poverty line. Overall, it is estimated that 70% of area residents can be classified as low income.

Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money, land, and materials, Habitat Trenton builds or rehabilitates simple, decent houses. Families are selected based on their level of need, willingness to work, acceptance of responsibilities and ability to repay mortgage. Families must complete at lease 500 hours of sweat equity and an additional 100 hours of homeowner education classes. Qualified families purchase Habitat homes with zero-interest mortgage, enabling them to own their home.

Habitat Trenton is financed by private donations from individuals, community groups, corporations, charities, foundations, schools, and religious organizations. Government funds are not accepted for new construction or renovation or repair of existing houses. We do accept government funds for acquisition of land or houses in need of rehabilitation. We also accept government funds for streets, utilities, and administrative expenses, as long as the funds have no strings attached that would violate Habitat Trenton’s principles.

Where We Serve

Habitat for Humanity – Trenton Area servers Mercer County and specifically Trenton, the Princeton Borough, Princeton Township, Lawrence and Lawrenceville, Hopewell, Pennington, Ewing, and smaller towns in between. We have built houses in Trenton, and Princeton Township.

In the past ten years, Trenton Habitat has focused it efforts in the East Trenton neighborhood. This area was recently designated a redevelopment area by the City of Trenton. Our planned projects for this summer are concentrated along North Clinton Avenue. This area is also the location of the East Trenton Center (ETC), the home of Habitat for Humanity-Trenton Area.
